Pool etiquette

Know the customs. Feel at home at the table.

These small habits make a better night for everyone. Read the guide and ask about anything unfamiliar.

Start and finish with respect

Offer a handshake or fist bump before and after a match, whatever the result.

Give the shooter space

Wait away from the table until your turn. Avoid hovering near pockets or the shot line.

Stay still and keep it down

When a player is down on a shot, avoid movement in their sightline and keep nearby conversations quiet.

Notice the tables around you

Check your surroundings before stepping back or lingering over a shot. Give other players room to play.

Ask before they get down

Clarify a called shot or raise a concern before the shooter takes their stance. Avoid last-second interruptions.

Let the rack finish

Keep your cue assembled and stay clear until the game is over. Don’t act as though a shot has already been conceded.

Enjoy the good shots

Celebrate without rubbing in an opponent’s miss. Let good sportsmanship outlast the score.

Be ready and keep play moving

Arrive on time, know when you’re up and use a considerate pace. Follow your format’s shot-clock rules.

Ask around when you’re unsure

Check the current rules and ask fellow league players for help if you’re unsure. Keep the discussion calm, respectful and focused on the situation.

Make it easy for the next player

Offer advice only when welcome and allowed by your format. Check scores together, care for the equipment and help newcomers understand the routine.

When you need the playing rules

This guide covers customs and consideration. For fouls, concessions, coaching and scoring, check the rules for your format.
